, minority leader mitch mcconnell reached out to someone he believed he could help jump start the negotiations and perhaps deliver an 11th hour compromise, and that would be vice president joe biden. mcconnell and biden reportedly spoke several times by phone throughout the night after talks with harry reid came to a halt. >> there's no single issue that remains an impossible sticking point. the sticking point appears to be a willingness, an interest, or frankly the courage to close the deal. i want everyone to know i'm willing to get this done. but i need a dance partner. >> before i continue to set the scene, anyone here think biden can make a difference? dan? >> not before the end of the day. i just think that even if the senate -- even if they work out a deal that's acceptable to the senate, then it's going to go to the house. speaker boehner has said they'll either vote on what the senate produces or amend it. that's a lot of work to get done within a day. and i think there are a number of house republicans still holding out, believing that they would rather vote to cut t
yesterday, minority leader mitch mcconnell reached out to someone he believed could help jump-start the negotiations and perhaps deliver an 11th-hour compromise. that's vice president joe biden. mcconnell and biden reportedly spoke several times by phone throughout the night after talks with harry reid came to a halt. welcome back, everyone, to "morning joe." that's the latest. ed rendell and jeffrey sachs all with us along with sam stein and michael steele in washington. joining us also in washington, senior national correspondent for "bloomberg businessweek," joshua green. and joshua, before we go on to what led to this doomsday scenario that we're facing right now, which was all set up by lawmakers in washington, talk to me about what businesses are looking for and wall street is looking for. there will be reaction. there's always this discussion about the need for certainty. at best, we're going to get some sort of small deal that puts everything off, which makes this whole deadline make no sense. are businesses going to respond well to that? >> if we get a deal, yes. i me
briefly about this earlier, but mitch mcconnell has a senate election in 2014. and if there's been one thing that's been noted over the past year, it's these crazy senate challengers have the chance of knocking off a person in the primary. and i'm assuming that mitch mcconnell knows that. >> this is great. this is great. we love this. tension at the convention of both ends of pennsylvania avenue, the white house, congress. this is terrific stuff. kurt, stay with us, okay? can you. we're begging you, begging you. >> you're adding gravitas to this. >>> we'll also bring in nbc news political director, chuck todd, also nbc white house correspo corresponde correspondent. >>> first, dylan dreyer with the forecast. >> we are going to see a good amount of snow across northern new england today. another one to two feet of snow possible. because of that, we do have winter storm warnings once again in effect. and this storm is just continuing to wreak havoc on the airports. that's the problem with the holiday travelers all taking up the flights that were all canceled yesterday, still trying to ma
? the republican leadership, mitch mcconnell and john boehner and the whole rest of them made an unholy alliancalliance. they said instead of watching the tea party rise up and become a third force in american politics, which is what says, they said we're going to try to bind these two things together. we don't wants it to sflit apart the right. we try to pretend like we're one party. they're clearly not one party. john boehner may get re-elected as speaker, but he has no more authority to control the caucus to get them to stroet for his own budget proposals than he does today. the optics may change and we'll go over the cliff and taxes go up and they're presented with the ability to lower taxes and john boehner won't have any authority because he tries to run two parties and not one. until republicans deal with na and until the leadership says we made a mistake, these are a different group of people and have darch the agenda for us, they stop us taking national power. until that happens, we'll be in the mess for a another couple of years at least. >> i totally agree with that. i think
